The band was formed in 2005 in Beijing. Their sound, influenced by the drone of The Velvet Underground, Suicide, and Sonic Youth and the formal structures of Steve Reich and Glenn Branca, is a combination of brilliantly-textured roar and hard open chords that are used to explore and tear apart their beautifully crafted songs.
As befits what is one of the most admired Chinese bands in the world, Carsick Cars has performed widely in China and abroad. In addition to packing clubs in every major city in China, Carsick Cars also toured Europe with Sonic Youth, who described Carsick Cars as their favorite band in China.

George van Wetering (MONOKINO) – Fake Virtue
Lead singer and songwriter of the experimental pop band MONOKINO, George van Wetering will perform his solo show at Cinetol. Expect a highly exceptional voice, angry guitars and electronics producing melancholic, future 80’s music. The visuals are inspired by the rugged surfaces and the otherworldly universe created by artist Mark Bradford. The shifting of perspective and the multitude of layers are aspects George expresses in his songs and visuals, placing his songs into futuristic Shanghai, where electronic musicians, djs and vjs, rule Shanghai’s nightlife. Coming from a more traditional popmusic background the artist got inspired by Shanghai’s individual approach towards music during his 6 month art residency in Shanghai.
Monokino’s albums have been released by China’s largest independent label ‘Modern Sky’. Monokino frequently participates in China’s growing music festivals, including performances at the Strawberry Music Festival in Beijing and Shanghai and the World Expo in Shanghai. The album ‘Fake Virtue’ has just been released in the US. Monokino often toured the East and West coast of America (SXSW 2014, CMJ 2014, Culture Collide 2014). Latest album ‘Fake Virtue’ has been critically acclaimed in various countries. Monokino has worked with producer Tony Visconti (David Bowie)
